PRESS RELEASE December 17th 2006

METROJAYA CHARITY BAZAAR - IN AID OF THE LESS FORTUNATE CHILDREN

As part of its Christmas Promotion and in furtherance of fulfilling its obligations as a socially responsible corporate citizen,  Metrojaya hosted a Charity Bazaar at the Concourse, LG Floor, Berjaya Times Square December 9 & 10. An assortment of items on sale at the bazaar included food, gifts and home items, and potted plants along with a range of games and activities.

Many Metrojaya staff sacrificed their weekend to come and help distribute goodies at the Bazaar and even brought their families along to help!

There were a number of performances to entertain shoppers during the bazaar, including songs from the Children of the Sunbeams Home, and the choir of the Philharmonic Society of Selangor.

The Bazaar was a tremendous success, thanks in no small part to loyal Metrojaya customers and business partners, some of whom bought up tranches of coupons for their own staff to attend and support.

The Charity Bazaar raised RM86,000 for the charities being supported, and the proceeds will be channeled to Yayasan Sunbeams Home in Kuala Lumpur, the Handicapped Children’s Centre in Penang and the Rumah Anak-Anak Yatim Darul Hanan in Johore.

Yayasan Sunbeams Home, Kuala Lumpur
Yayasan Sunbeams Home accepts children who are orphaned, abused, neglected, abandoned and children who come from broken families regardless of whatever location, background or beliefs they come from.

The home’s vision is to see hungry children provided with food, those who are thirsty with drink, those who are homeless with shelter and education, those who are naked with clothes and those who are sick with care and concern.

Currently the home’s need is to raise funds to purchase their own properties for the boys’ and girls’ homes as they have been using rented premises since the home was founded in 1995.

Handicapped Children’s Centre, Penang

The Centre admits children between the ages of 5 to 18 years and provides basic primary education and co-curricular activities, vocational training in handicraft and sewing, physiotherapy and speech therapy, training for personal and social skills with emphasis on activities of daily living, financial support for surgical treatment and travel expenses for children with congenital heart lesions, provides calipers, artificial limbs and wheelchairs for the disabled.

The Centre has a child sponsorship programme as well as a corporate sponsorship programme where the sponsorship runs for a year and the fund is used to provide the facilities and amenities at the Centre for the child. The Centre also welcomes any donations from the public in the form of cash or even in foodstuff suitable for children’s consumption.

Rumah Anak-Anak Yatim Darul Hanan in Johore.

The home provides shelter to orphans, children from poor families and who are less fortunate between the ages of 7 to 17 years. Currently the home has 54 children of whom 33 are boys and 21 girls.

Charity campaigns such as this has been an integral part of Metrojaya‘s continuous community projects in giving back to society as Metrojaya cares for the less fortunate and would like to help improve their quality of life.  As these charities receive help from well wishers, Metrojaya hopes that, through the Charity Bazaar, funds can be raised to help support the home’s needs and contribute towards their charity fund.
