Tsunami Aid

The Tsunami that impacted the world in December 2004 was nothing short of devastating, leaving nations and families decimated in its wake. It has been branded as the worst human disaster of all time. At the same time, it represented an opportunity for humanity to test both its speed and resolve to respond with as much means at our disposal and redress the balance that the earthquake and consequent tsunami so deeply disturbed.

In Malaysia, everyone knows that they were incredibly blessed to have been spared the full force of the disaster. Consequently, Metrojaya resolved to help organise a Celebrity Charity Drive at its flagship department store in Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur. In a press conference to mark the launch, Metrojaya CEO Robert Heng was clear: "We have to help. How can we not help?"

Many Malaysian singing stars came forward in support, including Sheila Majid, Ziana Zain, Erra Fazira, and Ella. Each brought personal items for auction with proceeds going to the MERCY Malaysia Humanitarian fund aimed at providing long term relief for the tsunami victims.

Metrojaya has a long record in seeking to raise both funds and awareness of the human needs of those in our community. Most recently in October 2004, Metrojaya organised a fund raising bazaar at its Mid Valley department store to raise funds for local children’s homes as part of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival celebration.
